OpenBSD 3.9 ist ein hochsicheres, auf BSDlite 4.4 basierendes Betriebssystem (ähnlich wie FreeBSD und NetBSD).

Die 3 CDs von OpenBSD 3.9 enthalten installierbare Vollversionen für die folgenden 5 Architekturen: i386, AMD64, Sparc, Sparc64, PowerPC (Mac) sowie die vollständigen Sourcecodes und eine Fülle an zusätzlichen Softwarepaketen für alle Architekturen (Ports).
Weitere Architekturen wie Vax, Alpha oder Zaurus sind nur als Download verfügbar.

OpenBSD wird allgemein als das sicherste BSD-System angesehen mit proaktiven Security-Features und integrierter Kryptographie.
OpenBSD 3.9 enthält Emulatoren zur Ausführung der meisten Binärprogramme von SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSD/OS, SunOS und HP-UX.
